mlso.events.2005 ---------------- The following is a list of activity as noted by HAO staff in Boulder, where the MLSO data are processed and analyzed. More information concerning observations at MLSO can be found at http://mlso.hao.ucar.edu. Dates are given by calendar day and by year/day-of-year. Key to abbreviations and terminology: CHIP The 1083 nm instrument at MLSO, which provides both intensity and velocity information. CME Coronal Mass Ejection Mk4 The white-light coronagraph at MLSO. MLSO Mauna Loa Solar Observatory PA Position angle (measured counterclockwise from north pole. e.g., east equator = 90 degrees, west equator = 270 degrees) PICS The H-alpha instrument at MLSO, which provides both disk observations and occulted off-limb observations. R Solar radius: e.g., 0.9R is 0.9 solar radii from sun center projected onto the plane of the sky. UT Universal time (any notation in the form 17:33 refers to 17:33 UT). The term "Endeve-like" refers to the theoretical study by Endeve et al., 2003, ApJ, 589, 1040-1053; and specifically to the simulated CME shown in Figure 4. The phrase "flow reminiscent of 99d121" refers to an active prominence described in detail in Gilbert et al., 2001, ApJ, 549, 1221-1230. ***************************************************************************** 1/01/2005 2005d00002 No data taken at MLSO today. 1/02/2005 2005d00002 No data taken at MLSO today. 1/03/2005 2005d003 Mk4 data: 23:13-02:25; PICS 22:55-02:26; CHIP 22:54-02:26. Filament eruption PA 150, 0.5R begins ~22:15; two-ribbon flare extending from eruption site to PA 140, 0.3R reaches maximum brightness near 23:00; large filament extending from PA 50, 0.7R to PA 350, 0.35R is disrupted beginning about 23:30, possibly as a result of a wave from the flaring region. The wave is not immediately apparent in CHIP intensity or velocity or in PICS disk observations, but the timing is about right, and there is no intervening active region to deflect such a wave. Flaring, surging, filament activity in active region PA 280, 0.5R. Forming, active filament PA 250, 0.8R. 9/02/2005 2005d245 Mk4 data: 17:00-23:07; PICS 16:45-23:10; CHIP 16:45-23:10. Minor filament activity: PA 30, 0.5R; PA 105, 0.9R; PA 125, 0.5R; PA 210, 0.8R; PA 290, 0.7R; PA 300, 0.95R. 12/17/2005 2005d351 Mk4 data: 17:49-02:22; PICS 17:17-02:28; CHIP 17:18-02:25. LASCO shows a CME centered at PA 270, which is in progress at the beginning of the day, already having reached 10R by 00:18. Faint CME PA 50 enters C2 before 06:00 (exact timing not possible because of apparent mask problem at this PA). Continual outflow in region from PA 260 to 280 throughout the day. No EIT data. Very tall, thin prominence PA 312 with flows (toward the end of the day) draining from the top and all along the north side, extending all the way to PA 330. CHIP velocity indicates significant swirling in the body of the filament, and shows that the draining flows are moving away from the observer. Active prominence system extending from PA 50 to 75, with substantial flows parallel to the limb; a small piece of the prominence at PA 65 appears to erupt beginning ~23:50. This eruption may be associated with the fast, narrow CME entering LASCO C2 after 02:00 (12/19/05) at PA 70. This is also the same PA from which the narrow CME entered C2 at ~13:00 (12/18/05). EIT also shows filament channel extending across the sun from PA 45, 1.0R to PA 305, 1.0R, and dipping southward to PA 290, 0.3R. Surging off limb PA 95, 265. Very strong surging near a sunspot PA 250, 0.4R; one surge travels on a loop-like trajectory all the way to PA 270, 0.5R. Surging and flaring in active region PA 265, 0.9R. Active filament extending (through remnant active region) from PA 100, 0.6R to PA 125, 0.7R; shows significant loss of material at its southern end through the day, possibly due to draining. Long filament channel observed in EIT is extremely sparsely filled, although at its eastern end, there is a significant increase of filament material through the day, essentially providing a filament appearance. A less striking appearance of filament material through the observing day occurs toward the western end of the channel. LASCO shows continual outflow in streamers PA 65, 130, 285. EIT shows repeated flaring with dimmings associated with active region PA 65, 0.7R. This activity appears to be generally temporally and spatially associated with the pulses of outflow in the streamer at PA 65. The dimmings occur at ~02:48, ~06:12, ~10:00, and ~17:00, while the pulses appear in C2 at ~02:58, ~06:30, ~11:00-15:00, and after ~18:00. Small prominence at PA 55 shows substantial flow of material along a loop-like trajectory all the way to PA 45; may be reminiscent of 99d121 flow. Because of sky conditions, this activity is probably best seen in CHIP intensity and velocity. Active prominence PA 235 shows significant draining throughout the observing day. Very active filament (in active region) extending from PA 100, 0.85 to PA 100, 0.6. It appears that there is a possible small eruption of some of the filament material PA 105, 0.7R, ~01:26; next day's EIT shows faint brightening same time, same place; also, LASCO C2 shows a small, faint CME PA 110 after ~02:00. Filament appears PA 315, 0.85R toward the end of the observing day. Small active filament PA 175, 0.5R dissapears through the observing day. LASCO C2 shows a small, faint CME PA 110 after ~02:00. A possibly related, very faint CME centered near PA 90 is moving outward in C2 early in the day. EIT shows thin, looplike brightenings PA 75, 0.5R through the day. Flaring in active region PA 300, 0.6R. Active prominence PA 125 with draining flows extending all the way to PA 143. Small active prominence PA 230, with draining. Very strong surging from near sunspot at PA 70, 0.6R; this is apparently the origin of the EIT brightenings mentioned above; note that the surges move along a looplike trajectory toward PA 80, 0.45R. Very active filament PA 110, 0.5R exhibiting a strong disruption (probably eruption) ~23:30, accompanied by flaring at PA 105, 0.6R and at PA 115, 0.8R. The apparently erupting material extends from PA 105, 0.65R to PA 110, 0.5R. This all seems to be a prelude to a significant eruption from this region early the next day (see 05d362, LASCO and EIT). Several small, mildly active filaments over the disk. Brightenings in Halpha in and around the active region centered at PA 300, 0.6R. 12/28/2005 2005d362 Mk4 data: 17:51-02:23; PICS 17:25-02:21; CHIP 17:26-02:22. Large CME centered at PA 130 enters LASCO C2 before ~03:30. This corresponds to a flaring in EIT extending from PA 100, 0.6R to PA 120, 0.4R beginning ~02:30 and a dimming extending from PA 90, 0.3R to PA 50, 0.2R beginning ~03:00. A small puff of material appearing to be a follow-on to this CME appears in C2 at PA 150, ~19:00. The equatorward extension of the northern polar coronal hole grows dramatically in size through the latter half of the day, and this appears to have some connection with an extension of the dimming associated with the early CME. Small active prominence with some draining PA 128. Small filament eruption PA 135, 0.9R, ~19:45. Low-lying, faint prominence flows PA 270-290. Significant Halpha brightenings (possibly surges) in active region centered at PA 100, 0.6R. Active filaments: PA 40, 0.9R; PA 50, 0.8R; PA 60, 0.9R; PA 70, 0.6R; PA 90, 0.9R; PA 115, 0.6R; PA 120, 0.3R; PA 125, 0.95R; PA 250, 0.8R; PA 250, 0.9R. 12/29/2005 2005d363 Mk4 data: 17:30-02:07; PICS 17:23-02:09; CHIP 17:22-02:08. LASCO C2 shows a classic Endeve-like CME at PA 75. A faint CME centered at PA 140 enters C2 ~13:00, and a second, much larger and brighter CME near the same PA enters C2 at ~18:00. The latter CME appears to correspond to an EIT dimming appearing after 18:00 at PA 155, 0.3R. The dimming slowly expands southward and is followed from behind (just north) by an expanding flare ribbon. EIT shows flaring in active region PA 65, 0.35R, after ~21:00. Low-lying active prominences PA 125, 290, 305 with draining from top and sides. Large surge off limb PA 6, ~20:24. Surging off limb PA 110, 165, 200, 230. S-shaped filament channel extending from PA 130, 0.5R to PA 200, 0.1R is fully filled (in H-alpha) in its western portion and partially filled in its eastern portion. Flaring on either side of the eastern half of the channel corresponds to flaring seen in EIT, while a CHIP brightening corresponds to the EIT dimming. There is no evidence for filament eruption in connection with the 18:00 CME and dimming, although the filament is activated around 00:00 and may or may not show signs of minimal eruption after the activation. A small filament just north of the large filament channel (PA 110, 0.35R) appears to erupt just after 19:30. If there is filament material in the CME, this eruption may be its source. Significant brightening (in H-alpha) in active region centered near PA 55, 0.45R after 20:00. Surging from near sunspot at the western end of this active region ~00:30. Possible very small filament eruption PA 55, 0.75R ~23:00. Possible small filament eruption PA 150, 0.8R, ~21:30. Faint CME centered near PA 150 enters LASCO C2 ~06:30. CME centered near PA 90 enters C2 ~09:30. Very narrow CME along narrow streamer PA 100, enters C2 18:30. EIT shows continued evolution of the two-ribbon flare and dimming region of the previous day (12/29). There is a minor brightening of loops crossing the the eastern end of the filament channel (see 12/29) near PA 140, 0.5R, at ~06:00, and this may be associated with the PA 150 CME. EIT shows minor flaring in active region near PA 75, 0.5R, ~03:00. Spar oscillations compromise the quality of the PICS limb data. Low-lying active prominences with some draining: PA 45, 107, 125, 250, 300-310. Pair of loops (or possibly just an artifact) appear in a single PICS limb image at PA 65, 20:44; the absence of these in CHIP intensity suggests the artifact interpretation. Apparent small filament eruption from quiet region PA 210, 0.55R, ~23:00; this filament is very active prior to the possible eruption. Slowly disappearing filament PA 20, 0.8R. Active filament extending from PA 10, 0.3R to PA 25, 0.6R; a small portion of the north end of this filament appears to erupt after ~01:35. Flaring in active regions: PA 45, 0.35R, 20:22; PA 130, 0.1R, 21:04. Active region PA 285, 0.95R flaring throughout the day.
