Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mon Feb 26 17:43:00 GMT 1996 Year: 96 Doy: 057 Observer: koon console Feb 26 17:39 Content-Length: 3938 X-Lines: 113 Status: RO WEATHER COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 17:43:07 GMT 1996 Sky is mostly clear although clouds are blowing down off the mountain in front of the sun, wind=15 mph from the South, temp=32 F, lots of snow and frost on the ground outside. Mon Feb 26 18:12:01 GMT 1996: Patrol Start DPMON COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 18:26:39 GMT 1996 Pausing the Patrol program while I figure out why the bench isn't rotating. WEATHER COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 18:28:01 GMT 1996 Clouds cleared so I have started observations. Mon Feb 26 19:05:41 GMT 1996: Patrol Start DPMON COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 19:05:44 GMT 1996 It appears that the coude bench is rotating correctly under clock drive and manual control but the readout downstairs is incorrect, it stays on about 244.1 no matter what. I am also checking on the vignetting problem so the images may be blocked from time to time. WEATHER COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 19:10:34 GMT 1996 Orographic clouds are occasionally passing over. DPMON COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 19:12:29 GMT 1996 Optical runaway, fixing it. Mon Feb 26 19:14:08 GMT 1996: Patrol End Mon Feb 26 19:14:20 GMT 1996: Patrol Start MKIII COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 19:41:52 GMT 1996 Calibration was ruined by orographic clouds, trying again. DPMON COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 19:42:18 GMT 1996 I can't see any obvious vignetting at the Lyot stop before the Coude bench, but since the vignetting is more obvious later in the day I'll see what it looks like as the day progresses. It might also be caused by the tilt of the Daystar filter. DPMON COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 19:46:22 GMT 1996 The Coude bench angle readout downstairs is still incorrect, I get a correct reading if I hookup the spare monitor directly to the encoder upstairs, so it looks like there is a problem with the cable coming downstairs or with the interface or monitor downstairs. MKIII COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 19:59:28 GMT 1996 Orographic clouds are making it impossible to get a calibration, both of the first two attempts at a calibration are no good. Back to scanning for data. Mon Feb 26 20:02:59 GMT 1996: Calibration Mon Feb 26 21:00:01 GMT 1996: Calibration WEATHER COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 21:08:15 GMT 1996 Thick orographic clouds are slowly coming in from the West. MKIII COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 21:08:42 GMT 1996 Trying for a calibration. Mon Feb 26 21:23:02 GMT 1996: Patrol End WEATHER COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 21:24:10 GMT 1996 Clouds and fog are moving in, stopped observations and closed dome. MKIII COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 21:24:37 GMT 1996 The last attempt at a cal worked like normal, it was a good cal. DPMON COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 22:17:43 GMT 1996 I was able to get the correct DDC monitor readout after I pulled out then reseated that drawer on the OCP. I recalibrated the encoder readout to match the ephemeris position, also installed a longer hex bolt on the encoder mount since the previous bolt wasn't grabbing due to partially stripped threads where the bolt screwed in. WEATHER COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 22:22:10 GMT 1996 Weather isn't clearing, closing down. COMMENT: Mon Feb 26 22:31:02 GMT 1996 Activity report: QP: 125; 237; 255; 290.
