MKIII COMMENT: Sun Oct 19 17:08:28 GMT 1997 Kept getting "No tape unit detected" on the Akamai window, reset the KCC to fix. I tried moving around the spar while watching the image on the occulter and the O1 mechanism movement to see if things were working correctly. Suddenly all O1 guiding stopped, no chatter or motor movement was visible but the spar tracking kept the occulter centered, so I left it that way. I've seen this happen before, where it looks like there is no O1 guiding but the OCP O1 scales show slight movement and so does the Oscilloscope display above those. Maybe those are all measures of the signal that the O1 guider sensors see, and not a measure of what the O1 is actually doing. Or maybe the O1 is moving very slightly? Whatever is going on the scans always look better when this happens, maybe we don't need the O1 guiders? COMMENT: Sun Oct 19 17:32:55 GMT 1997 I didn't make it up to MLSO to observe yesterday. The brakes on the GSA car were extremely worn down, so I avoided further damage and used the day to try to find a place that could fix them on a Saturday. It ended up taking all day as I figured, this has happened before. I am setting up another account with a company that is open all day on Saturdays and Sundays (Firestone). Ralph's shop is the best but he doesn't work on Sunday and sometimes doesn't work on Saturdays. So emergency repairs in the future should go more smoothely and waste less time. MKIII COMMENT: Sun Oct 19 17:42:12 GMT 1997 I disconnected the power to the O1 guider motors but the OCP O1 scales and O-scope display are still moving. So those actually show what the O1 guider sensors are seeing at the occulting disk, which is basically what the spar guider is doing. I will leave them disconnected to see what the scans look like today. Sent info about error message to David and Alice. MKIII COMMENT: Sun Oct 19 22:23:55 GMT 1997 Drive gear on E-W O1 guider motor is stripped this time, I replaced the N-S gear a few months ago. I removed the drive assembly for E-W direction. I will bring up the spare gears from the machine shop downtown where I was working on them. Will try to install assembly on Wednesday, my next day up here. The N-S O1 guider assembly is still hooked up. Will have to adjust occulting by adjusting the spar guiding until I can fix the E-W assembly. Scans were affected by my experimenting earlier, occulting got bad around 2130, so most of the day was OK. MKIII COMMENT: Sun Oct 19 22:37:15 GMT 1997 I didn't see any write errors, there was tape drive activity (LEDs), and the tape did pop out of the drive today.
