MKIII COMMENT: Sat Oct 25 17:03:26 GMT 1997 Tried reseting the KCC right after turning on main power switch but I still got the series of "No drive detected" messages on the Akamai window, until I reset the KCC again. I started the scans before I typed in Run, I hope that doesn't cause any problem. MKIII COMMENT: Sat Oct 25 19:10:52 GMT 1997 Haven't got any data so far due to clouds. PICS COMMENT: Sat Oct 25 19:11:22 GMT 1997 Getting disk images, but not limb images. MKIII COMMENT: Sat Oct 25 19:49:17 GMT 1997 I took apart the new tape drive enclosure and checked the cable connections, they looked good. Since I'm not getting data due to clouds I will stop the Patrol and try the new drive with a new, unused tape. The info on the drive says it will only read in 8200 tape format, but will read and write in 8500 and 8500c formats. So if these drives are like the Lowl drives then they will write in the format that the used tape header was originally set to, maybe that was 8200 format and the drives are getting confused. So maybe a new tape will allow these drives to write in their default tape format. There was a Tape write error 0 wrote 615 records after the first scan, but so far the second and third scans gave no error messages. MKIII COMMENT: Sat Oct 25 20:32:21 GMT 1997 I have been getting those long lists of Tape write error 0 messages for around the last 8 scans or so. I'm trying to see if any other useful messages are also in those lists. MKIII COMMENT: Sat Oct 25 20:35:03 GMT 1997 No other unusual messages in those error message lists. MKIII COMMENT: Sat Oct 25 20:42:59 GMT 1997 It is interesting that although I got all those error messages which is something new to me, when I did an End Day the tape eventually was popped out of the drive which is also different. The last errors I remember on the new drives were the tape not popping out at after doing End Day, and the Write field on the KCP staying green. MKIII COMMENT: Sat Oct 25 21:48:47 GMT 1997 When cycling power to KCC to change back to the spare drive I didn't get any "No tape detected" messages even without reseting the KCC quickly. Maybe because the tape was already getting loaded when I turned on the KCC. MKIII COMMENT: Sat Oct 25 21:53:55 GMT 1997 I tried ejecting the tape from the spare drive and closing the door, then cycled the KCC power. Eventually it started giving its "... tape not present" messages. So I installed a tape but the messages kept coming instead of stopping. Then I tried turning off both the drive and the KCC and turning them back on at exactly the same time, like what happens in the morning when we turn on the single power switch. This time I kept getting the familiar "No MkIII tape unit detected" messages. So then I tried turning them both off again and back on at exactly the same time again, but then I pressed the Reset button on the KCC as quickly as I could and this time there wasn't any of those tape messages at all. Then the funny thing, I repeated both those last two procedures (with and without the KCC reset) and both times there wasn't any tape messages. So I wondered if End Day had something to do with those messages appearing the next morning. I then did an End Day and turned off the drive and KCC and turned them on at the same time and eventually got the "No MkIII tape unit detected". So I did an End Day again and turned off the drive and the KCC, but this time after turning them both on at the same time I quickly pressed the KCC reset button, and this time I did get the "No MkIII tape unit detected" messages, just like I did this morning. So it looks like something happens after doing an End Day that causes us to have to start up the KCC after the tape drive to avoid those messages, I'm not sure how long after the tape drive starts that we should reset the KCC but it needs to be done unless something (possibly in End Day) gets modified. One thing End Day does is to point the barrel to 360 degrees. How about putting a time delay in the KCC code? Maybe 10 seconds? So that the tape drive gets going first.
