----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fri Oct 4 16:44:27 GMT 2002 Year: 02 Doy: 277 Observer: yasukawa WEATHER COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 16:44:30 GMT 2002 Cool, in thick, extensive altostratus and cirrostratus, no wind. COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 16:45:04 GMT 2002 Using this opportunity to load additional memory into kaiee. Will be inserting SIMM cards one at a time to determine which chip(s) are faulty. These chips were loaded previously, all at once, and the upgrade failed. COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 17:15:32 GMT 2002 First SIMM in U0400 recognized. Got a series of error messages at beginning of boot indicating SCSI transport failure, but that is irrelevant to this test at this time. COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 17:26:46 GMT 2002 Second SIMM installed in U0401. Kaiee did not come up. HD chattered briefly and then nothing. Monitor did not come up. Turned kaiee off and removed SIMM from U0401, restarting. COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 17:30:06 GMT 2002 kaiee came up like before with one additional simm inserted. COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 17:37:28 GMT 2002 Another SIMM inserted into U0401. Kaiee came up and recognized the additional memory. Got same SCSI transport error message--does that come up all the time anyway? COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 17:46:32 GMT 2002 Test also confirmed that the slot was not the cause of previous failure. COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 17:55:34 GMT 2002 Third SIMM installed in U402. Kaiee came up OK. Same SCSI transport error. It is a timeout thing. COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 18:06:06 GMT 2002 Suspected bad SIMM installed into U0403 as a retest. Sparc came up, but this time we saw a flurry of error messages flash by. Basically the boot failed at memory allocation test at several longwords, fff8000, fff7000, fff6000, .... Expecting 0 observed 2000 Suspected part in J0403 as we expected. There were also a couple of level 15 interrupts, at one point, the Sparc recognized the additional memory and then spit out more memory allocation error messages and stopped at a level 15 interrupt and stayed stopped. Turned system off to remove bad SIMM. Will reassemble kaiee with 224 Mb of memory. COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 18:19:40 GMT 2002 Kaiee back up and running with 224 Mb of RAM. Located the bad SIMM with this test. One slot available. WEATHER COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 18:28:17 GMT 2002 Still in heavy overcast, no shadows to guide on. COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 20:41:55 GMT 2002 Mailing the faulty SIMM back to Bunny via First Class Mail. WEATHER COMMENT: Fri Oct 4 21:20:35 GMT 2002 Cirrostratus thinned enough to produce diffuse shadows. Decided to open things up and try to get some data.
