Since function is not critical to operations I will just remove it when I can get the ladder under the spar. Blue dot-staff absence. ********* **PSPT PROBLEM**: Mon Aug 18 20:38:26 GMT 2003 Haze deposition only on outer surface of ND filter. Surface facing the CaK filter and the CaK filter surfaces were clean. Deposition may be caused by the rotating shutter "below" the filters or the heater, which is now turned on and operating at 35 degrees C. Cleaned off the haze with pure ethyl alcohol. Reoriented tilt of the ND filter. Washer stack was at original "good" filter position (with "old" filter tilt). Washer stack now at "old" filter position with "old" filter tilt. Washer stack is 0.1365" thick. I found the lost small washer on the floor so it is back in the stack with the original combination of washers. Filter assembly reinstalled and observations restarted. WEATHER COMMENT: Tue Aug 19 00:51:04 GMT 2003 Still in thick orographic clouds. **PSPT PROBLEM**: Tue Aug 19 00:51:25 GMT 2003 Pulled out CaK filter to reinspect the ND filter. There was no haze on the front surface after a few hours of sitting inside the instrument. **PSPT PROBLEM**: Tue Aug 19 00:57:37 GMT 2003 Removed blue filter. Its ND filter also had a haze deposited on its front surface in a gradient from around its middle. There appeared to be a very small partial fingerprint near the edge. Cleaned filter with ethyl alcohol and reinstalled it into the wheel. **PSPT PROBLEM**: Tue Aug 19 01:09:21 GMT 2003 Removed Red filter. ND on this filter assembly was clean (!). Quite puzzling, no? Hazing appears to be either directional on the filter wheel or the two ND filters (on the CaK and the Blue) have a haze-o-philic quality to some or all of their front surfaces.
