Scattered cirrus to west. Wed Aug 20 16:58:28 GMT 2003 MKIV Start Patrol PSPT COMMENT: Wed Aug 20 17:06:13 GMT 2003 Starting up. **PSPT PROBLEM**: Wed Aug 20 17:06:37 GMT 2003 Removed and inspected the swapped Red and CaK filters and the Blue filter that was left in its correct station. With heater left on overnight, Red filter that was in the CaK position was heavily hazed as we expected. CaK filter that was left in the Red position was relatively clean. Blue filter was partially (~2/3 of area) hazed as before. Cleaned all ND filters and installed filters into their correct stations before starting up. PSPT COMMENT: Wed Aug 20 17:14:08 GMT 2003 Starting daily obs. **PSPT PROBLEM**: Wed Aug 20 17:25:36 GMT 2003 Just replaced hatch cover. I was watching the positions move past the optical path. **PSPT PROBLEM**: Wed Aug 20 17:40:25 GMT 2003 When in overnight stow position, blocked station is positioned over optical path. Other blocked station is partially in hatch location and Blue filter is also partially in hatch location. Blue filter is next to one of the heater rods. Next filter around is the CaK filter that is positioned next to the other heater rod. Next filter is the Red filter which is positioned distally to the hatch and is not positioned next to any heater rod. This is probably why the Red filter is not normally hazed over whereas the CaK and the Blue filters are hazed over. During normal operations, observing, the filters do not spend a lot of time sitting near the heater rods. MKIV COMMENT: Wed Aug 20 17:57:23 GMT 2003 Centered O1. I will attempt to remove insulation material from the filter wheel area. **PSPT PROBLEM**: Wed Aug 20 22:20:34 GMT 2003 Turned off heater. Removed filters and checked ND pre-filters. All were relative clean. WEATHER COMMENT: Wed Aug 20 22:22:49 GMT 2003 in scattered orographic clouds. Thu Aug 21 01:12:56 GMT 2003 CHIP End Patrol WEATHER COMMENT: Thu Aug 21 01:13:05 GMT 2003 Panic dome closure. Was working on PSPT when it suddenly started raining off dark clouds to east which I did not notice due to shutter pointing west. Thu Aug 21 01:15:40 GMT 2003 PICS End Patrol Thu Aug 21 01:17:22 GMT 2003 MKIV End Patrol **PSPT PROBLEM**: Thu Aug 21 01:39:40 GMT 2003 Removed all insulation from inside of filter wheel cavity after removing the filters for safe-keeping. Removed as much of the RTV adhesive as possible. Cleaned out the debris with Wet-Swabs (isopropyl alcohol soaked foam-tipped wands) and reassembled the PSPT. Turned heaters back on after shutting PSPT down for the night. Darryl will check if the hazing is still occurring without the neoprene-like insulation. WEATHER COMMENT: Thu Aug 21 02:00:03 GMT 2003 Cloudburst has past, sky is now very clear except for thick altostratus cloud just to west of sun. Shutting down so I can clean up the PSPT platform and put away tools. COMMENT: Thu Aug 21 02:02:23 GMT 2003 Checked instruments. Although rain was pouring into the dome slot at the peak of the cloudburst (PSPT flap was still open for a while), no rain got onto the PSPT or onto the MK4/PICS/CHIP due to the direction the slots were facing when the wind-driven rain began. I got tops of the shutters closed and the spars moved before the rain became real heavy. O1s did not get any raindrops on them.
