----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mon Aug 5 16:03:34 UTC 2013 Year: 13 Doy: 217 Observer: FakeObserver Hi All, Day one of the Mk4/chip decommission went very well today. Ben and I made great progress in removing the Mk4 and chip from the spar. All of the chip has been removed from the spar (125 lbs) and much of Mk4 has been removed 157 pounds so far), mostly in small chunks 5-10 lbs. I have put some photos under subversion at kcorona/photographs/mk4 decommission. Allen also made great progress in the observing room clearing the electronics out of two of the racks. The plan to keep track of the moments worked well, and at the end of the day we were able to bring the spar back into balance. The challenge tomorrow will be to remove the massive aluminum barrel casting of the mk4. We will send a load of electronics to the recycling center in Hilo tomorrow. Should be no problem to have the spar clear by the end of the week. Best, Steve
