----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fri Dec 2 16:46:14 GMT 2016 Year: 16 Doy: 337 Observer: berkey WEATHER COMMENT: berkey: Fri Dec 02 16:47:49 GMT 2016 Temp: 37.0f, Humidity: 82%, Pressure: 28.832in, Wind: 5mph from 166degs, Skies: Heavy overcast with thunderstorms to the south of the mountain. Looks like we got a lot of melting overnight; ice on the road started about 10,000ft with accmulated snow/ice starting about 1 mile from the observatory. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY berkey: Fri Dec 02 17:32:56 GMT 2016 Moderate rain/sleet now falling ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY berkey: Fri Dec 02 17:48:21 GMT 2016 Snowing. Looks like the building camera is pointing directy into the on coming wind so we are quickly getting obscured. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY berkey: Fri Dec 02 18:15:29 GMT 2016 Minor dome leak. Drip rate is about one drop ever 1-5minutes. Drips are coming from the peak of the dome shutter on the right hand side of the shutter. currently this is the winward side of the shutter. Drips are fallilng onto the the pier and appear to be avoiding all of the instrumetation. ___end___ GONG COMMENT BY berkey: Fri Dec 02 19:26:24 GMT 2016 Gong turret stowed and covered. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY berkey: Fri Dec 02 19:49:33 GMT 2016 We got about 1 inch of snow since surise. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY berkey: Fri Dec 02 19:54:45 GMT 2016 Looks like the iwii disk filled up which casued the webcams to stop saving data. Deleting a bunch of old webcam images; allowed us to start taking dome and spar images again. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY berkey: Fri Dec 02 20:53:45 GMT 2016 There doesn't seem to be much of a leak any more. Dome and spar moved slightly to help incase it comes back. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY berkey: Fri Dec 02 20:59:33 GMT 2016 Looks like the NOAA annometers are frozen. Wind measurments may be artifically 0 in the weather log until the sun comes out. My current gues is we should be seeing ~5mph. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY berkey: Fri Dec 02 21:03:37 GMT 2016 Made some adjustmetns to the building camera today to hopefully prevent it from icing up. But now the camera is poorly aligned to its case, so it has a bit of an instrgram filter going on. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY berkey: Fri Dec 02 21:04:22 GMT 2016 Observatory is more or less in a condition to be abandoned for the next few days. Comp dewar is full and camera is off. Gong is stowed. Greg will try to make it up Satruday and Sunday to fill the dewar if conditions improve but the forecast for the weekend ( and through Tuesday) do not look good for observing or mountain access. Hopefully every pickup owner on the big island will be up over the weekend to help plow the road below the gate and remove any accumulated snow from the road :) ___end___
