The dome shutter doors and windows have been closed at this time. ___end___ WEATHER COMMENT: mcotter: Sat Aug 07 21:04:57 GMT 2021 Winds have increased and are now blowing steady, with an occasional gust, from the northwest. ___end___ WEATHER COMMENT: mcotter: Sat Aug 07 21:12:13 GMT 2021 **NOTE** - Thick clouds of smoke or dust can clearly be seen at lower elevation on the leeward side of the Big Island. The smoke/dust clouds stretch from Waimea in the north to past Hualalai in the south. I have been observing the formation for over thirty minutes and the smoke/ dust is rapidly making it's way into the interior and up in to the Saddle Valley. ___end___ WEATHER COMMENT: mcotter: Sat Aug 07 21:37:41 GMT 2021 The smoke/dust clouds have gained elevation and are now in the Western Saddle Valley. The clouds are dense and are completely blocking the view of the western shoreline of the Big Island, the Kohala Mountains, Wiakoloa and the lower parts of Hualalai. Additionally, the Pohakaloa Military Base is becoming obscured by the smole/dust clouds. Winds continue to blow steady from the northwest and continue to carry the smoke and dust up in to the Saddle Valley and higher elevations beyond. ___end___ WEATHER COMMENT: mcotter: Sun Aug 08 00:40:29 GMT 2021 Temp: 45.8f, Humidity: 97%, Pressure: 28.718in, Wind: 6mph from 341degs, Skies: The sky is completely overcast with dark gray rainclouds. Changed out the tack pad in the dome vestibule area. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun Aug 08 01:18:04 GMT 2021 The early morning hours were quite clear and beautiful. At approximately 10:30 am HST Altocumulus clouds began to form over the Maunaloa summit and pretty quickly after that the sky was covered and the instruments were paused. By late morning the sky started turning a dark gray and the dome shutter doors and windows were closed. From late morning until approximately 14:00pm HST smoke/ dust could be observed on the down slopes of Maunakea and Maunaloa toward the Kohala Coast steadily makings it's way inland toward the Saddle Valley. The smoke and dust finally made it's way up to higher altitude and became quite noticeable, blocking out all viewing of the leeward side of the Big Island and the Saddle Valley accompanied by the strong smell of smoke. ___end___ ONSITE STAFF: mcotter
