Of more concern is a hurricane due west and a little south of the Big Island of Hawaii heading directly our way. The hurricane is currently reported to be a category 3 hurricane, with a likelihood of becoming a category 4 within the next 24 to 36 hours. According to the satellite images the hurricane is well defined with a well defined eye. It is expected to be down graded to a tropical storm by the time it reaches the Hawaiian Islands with moderately high winds and heavy rain. It is predicted to reach the Big Island by the end of the week or weekend. We should continue to track the progress and strength of this storm system and plan our observatory activities accordingly. ___end___ Mon Jul 11 17:34:59 GMT 2022 Kcor Focus/alignment program exited KCOR COMMENT BY mcotter: Mon Jul 11 17:36:54 GMT 2022 There appeared to be a small break in the Cirrus clouds so an attempt was made to run the Kcor Focus routine, but by the time the Focus routine finished yet more bands of Cirrus moved into the viewing area. ___end___ Mon Jul 11 17:51:59 GMT 2022 Kcor Focus/alignment program exited WEATHER COMMENT: mcotter: Mon Jul 11 18:31:57 GMT 2022 Unfortunately the sky conditions continue to degrade and cloud coverage is increasing. ___end___ WEATHER COMMENT: mcotter: Mon Jul 11 20:20:14 GMT 2022 The sky is now completely overcast with Cirrostratus clouds and a bright halo is visible around the Sun. Additionally long wisps of high altitude Cirrus clouds are scattered all across the sky as well. According to satellite images the upper level Cirrus and Cirrostratus clouds will remain for at least the next 24 hours. Observations are not possible at this time due to poor sky conditions. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Mon Jul 11 22:55:51 GMT 2022 Brought the new entryway floor mats into the observatory control room and put them into place. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Mon Jul 11 23:01:05 GMT 2022 From the very start of the day the sky was overcast with Cirrostratus and high altitude Cirrus clouds. As the morning progressed the cloud coverage became much thicker to where there is now blue sky showing between the clouds at all. According to satellite images, this weather pattern will continue for the next 24 hours or so. Also a large hurricane is due west-southwest of the Big Island and approaching the area of the Hawaiian Islands due to arrive later in the week, or on the weekend. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Mon Jul 11 23:12:41 GMT 2022 Heading down a little early to get maintenance performed on the Sonata; oil change and new wipers. ___end___ ONSITE STAFF: mcotter
