BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
This software package contains the International Reference Ionosphere 1990
(IRI-90). IRI is the empirical reference model of ionospheric densities and
temperatures (electrons and ions) recommended for international use by the
Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) and the International Union of Radio
Science (URSI). It was established in a world-wide collaboration starting in
the late sixties. IRI is up-dated bi-yearly during special IRI workshops to
incorporate newly available measurements. IRI is based on all the important
ionospheric data sources including ground-based (ionosonde, absorption,
incoherent scatter) and spacecraft (Alouette, ISIS, AE, AEROS, DE, rockets)
measurements. IRI provides monthly mean values for magnetically quiet
conditions at non-auroral latitudes in the altitude range 50km to 2000km.
IRI-90 differs from IRI-86 by offering several new options: (i) URSI-1989
foF2 model, (ii) Gulyaeva-1987 model for F2 bottomside thickness, (iii)
analytical LAY-representation of E-F region, (iv) Danilov-Yaichnikov-1985
model for ion composition. IRI-90 includes also an improved representation
of the foE nighttime variation and several technical improvements of the
computer code. For more details see Bilitza (1990). In this version of
IRI the neutral temperature is obtained with CIRA-86, replacing the
earlier used CIRA-72.
The IRI-90 software package includes 28 files: the Fortran source codes
for the interactive IRI driver program IRID11.FOR, the IRI subroutines
and functions IRIF11.FOR, the CIRA-86 subroutines CIRA86.FOR, and a
special all-in-one subroutine IRIS12.FOR, the 24 binary data files for
the CCIR (foF2, M3000F2) and URSI (foF2) model coefficients from January
(CCIR11.BIN) to December (CCIR22.BIN), the log file of a test run of the
driver IRID11.LOG. IRID11 produces profiles of electron density, electron
and ion temperature and ion composition (O+, H+, He+, O2+, NO+) in
latitude or longitude (geodetic or geomagnetic), or solar activity
(12-months-running mean of solar sunspot number), or month, or day-of-
year, or local (or universal) time, or altitude. The IRI software is also
available on floppy disk for IBM compatible personal computers.
