----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sat Jul 25 16:59:50 GMT 1998 Year: 98 Doy: 206 Observer: koon WEATHER COMMENT: Sat Jul 25 16:59:52 GMT 1998 Clear sky, wind=5 mph from the SE, temp=50 F. **MLSO PROBLEM**: Sat Jul 25 17:05:31 GMT 1998 Network is down again, this is becoming the norm. I think the problem is somewhere in Hawaii this time, maybe at UH Manoa, stall is happening after the hop from the mountain. Anyway, I was able to limp through and read my mail. **MKIII PROBLEM**: Sat Jul 25 17:27:25 GMT 1998 I'm glad to hear that the cleaning helped. I still see opposing dark areas though they are rotated CCW from the last time I saw them two days ago, and they seem to be less dark. But they are there and now they are in the NNE and SSW. So the dark area that was in the NNW looks like it brightened up a little and moved to the NNE. The area in the SSW is apparently still there, although it may be a little brighter. Later I'll R+R the O1 and clean it more thoroughly, hopefully that will help. Right now the spar is pointed off the sun so I can see what kind of scattered light is coming off the O1 and possibly the polarization of the scattered light in the sky. It looks like the NNE and SSW have extra intensity and the regions in the WNW and ESE have low intensity (like the regions I noticed at closedown on Thursday that were aligned with where the regular scans also looked dark). COMMENT: Sat Jul 25 20:25:46 GMT 1998 OK, spar is tracking again. **MKIII PROBLEM**: Sat Jul 25 20:36:51 GMT 1998 I just tilted the O1 in the opposite direction from the tilt I tried on Thursday. Like the other tilt test I don't see any change in the reflection I found on the occulting focus plane, it must be coming from something other than the O1, but it may not be big problem anyway. Scan at 2040 ut show that the dark regions appear to be in the same places as before are weren't affected by the O1 tilt. **MKIII PROBLEM**: Sat Jul 25 20:46:38 GMT 1998 OK, I'm going to pause the scans soon and remove the O1 for a good cleaning. But the clouds have ruined my attempt to get data before and after the cleaning. The Nitrogen filter I added to the cleaning system helps immensely, now I don't have to redo the entire cleaning process because of oil spraying out on the lens from the supposedly oil-free tank.
