White light image of the solar corona made at the total solar eclipse on 26 Feb 1998 with the HAO Polarimetric Instrument for Solar Eclipse 98 (POISE98). This image shows both the plumes at the solar poles as well as helmet streamers nearer the Sun's equator at the onset of Solar Cycle 23. It has been numerically processed to remove the radial gradient due to the outward decrease in the density of the corona. The POISE replaces the HAO Newkirk White Light Coronal Camera. This new instrument has an aperture of 80 mm, an effective focal length of 1000 mm, and a field of view of 6.6 solar radii. This image was recorded at an exposure time of 1.0 second with a Pixel Vision Spectra Video camera using a 2034X2034 pixel Loral CCD. The HAO 98 eclipse team is Alice Lecinski, Kim Steander, David Elmore, Greg Card, Bruce Lites, and Steve Tomczyk.
