Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wed Jul 19 16:32:07 GMT 1995 Year: 95 Doy: 200 Observer: yasukawa console Jul 19 16:25 WEATHER COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 16:32:25 GMT 1995 Cold, clear, brisk south wind, temp=50, relative humidity=60%. Wed Jul 19 16:38:15 GMT 1995: Patrol Start LOW-L COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 16:43:26 GMT 1995 L00279 popped from unit 0. Loaded L00281. DPMON COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 17:01:59 GMT 1995 Guiding was very sluggish and drifting for a while, occulting was poor. Seems to have stabilized. Wed Jul 19 17:03:00 GMT 1995: Calibration LOW-L COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 17:49:20 GMT 1995 L00280 popped out of unit 1. Loaded L00282. It popped out so I cycled power on the drive and reloaded cassette. LOW-L COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 17:52:48 GMT 1995 L00282 popped out again. Cleaned drive. Reloaded. ed Jul 19 18:00:01 GMT 1995: Calibration Wed Jul 19 19:03:03 GMT 1995: Calibration WEATHER COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 19:15:14 GMT 1995 Orographic clouds forming nearby. MKIII COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 19:18:14 GMT 1995 1812-1848 vdiff revealed possible guiding error in right ascension. West was bright and there were strange concentric streaks. Reset (cycled power and reset dec) guider and did another take. coronal plot looks more like earlier scans. COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 19:25:12 GMT 1995 NOAA will be shutting off power to GONG to connect the UConn (or is it MIT?) shelter to the same power feed at around 2000 UT. I will be going down there to monitor the GONG building temperature when they are ready to do the connection. GONG UPS should keep the instrument system going, but lights and A/C among other things will be shut down when power is cut. COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 19:40:11 GMT 1995 Opening top of dome. WEATHER COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 19:44:20 GMT 1995 South wind has died down, this may cause the orographic clouds to build up over the site now. COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 20:00:03 GMT 1995 Going down the hill to check on NOAA's timetable for powerdown. (Powerdown will only affect GONG, not MLSO). Charlie and crew arrived to do some construction work for GONG. This may increase the sky noise if they create sawdust, or trample the lava very much. WEATHER COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 20:13:18 GMT 1995 In orographic clouds. Will shut down for now and close the dome, air moist due to remnants of former hurricane Barbara visiting the Big Isle. Wed Jul 19 20:15:00 GMT 1995: Patrol End COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 20:16:45 GMT 1995 Returning to GONG to monitor shutdown. WEATHER COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 21:37:01 GMT 1995 In orographic clouds. COMMENT: Wed Jul 19 21:37:20 GMT 1995 GONG power was off from 2030-2048. Instrument ran without skipping a beat, only lights and A/C shutdown. Also gave tour of GONG and MLSO to a high school physics teacher that had accompanied Charlie up here. Shutting down for the day.
