Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sat Sep 23 18:38:34 GMT 1995 Year: 95 Doy: 266 Observer: koon console Sep 23 18:36 WEATHER COMMENT: Sat Sep 23 18:38:38 GMT 1995 Clear sky, wind=5 mph from the North, temp=50 F. Sat Sep 23 18:45:57 GMT 1995: Patrol Start MKIII COMMENT: Sat Sep 23 18:52:41 GMT 1995 Wave plate motor is quiet now as it was yesterday when I closed down, butt lately in the middle of the observing day it seems to get noisy and can be felt to be vibrating more than usual. Will check out the spare motor to see how easy it is to lubricate it, may need to lubricate the one in use now. Sat Sep 23 19:01:03 GMT 1995: Calibration LOW-L COMMENT: Sat Sep 23 19:05:16 GMT 1995 Removed L00315 and installed L00316 in drive #1. The instrument was running but pointing incorrectly to where it should be this afternoon. The date and time displayed were correct, and the pointing parameters reflected the actual incorrect pointing. Trying to correct. Sat Sep 23 20:00:56 GMT 1995: Calibration LOW-L COMMENT: Sat Sep 23 20:27:48 GMT 1995 I haven't been able to get the instrument to point correctly. This must be the old Equinox Anomaly that we've seen in the past, for some reason the ephemeris can't seem to handle pointing correctly on the day of an Equinox. Maybe it is related to something like the "x Geocentric Rectangular Coordinate" value reaching a minimum yesterday and starting back in a different direction today (page C22 in the Astronomical Almanac). I've tried cycling the power to the computer, tape drives, Spar, and Rack without curing the problem. The program now thinks it is night (as of about 2010 ut) and isn't collecting data, the head is stowed. In the past this problem clears up on thee next observing day, but I will continue to restart the program occassionally in the hope that observations can be made today. Sat Sep 23 23:34:00 GMT 1995: Patrol End LOW-L COMMENT: Sun Sep 24 00:05:43 GMT 1995 I couldn't get the instrument to track, it thought it was night although the date and time were correct. Also, the values for HA were increasing at 30 degrees per hour instead of 15 degrees, it was also pointing at twice the normal rate before it stowed itself for the night. Anyway, at 0000 ut 9/24 the program suddenly started up pointing correctly and taking data again. I'll let David Elmore know about all this. MKIII COMMENT: Sun Sep 24 00:10:26 GMT 1995 I checked the spare waveplate motor and think it might be worth removing the original and checking the fan mounting for looseness as well as checking the bearings. I didn't hear anything unusual today though. COMMENT: Sun Sep 24 00:44:22 GMT 1995 Activity report: QP: 47; 83; 130-138; 285; 305. No coronal activity.
