Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tue May 2 16:22:05 GMT 1995 Year: 95 Doy: 122 Observer: yasukawa console May 2 16:20 WEATHER COMMENT: Tue May 2 16:22:11 GMT 1995 Cold, in altocumulus, lee lenticular clouds and thin cirrus at this time, Strong southerly wind continues 30-40 mph, temp=44F. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 16:24:31 GMT 1995 L00228 popped out, may attempt exposure tests if clouds persist beyond setup of MKIII and DPMON, otherwise loading L00230. Tue May 2 16:33:37 GMT 1995: Patrol Start LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 16:41:36 GMT 1995 Covered Coelostat window with cardboard. Ejecting L00229 from unit 1 and loading it into unit 0 for linearity experiment. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 16:58:55 GMT 1995 Ran a few exposures at default 10 until I got my bearings. Changed exposure to 30. Taking exposures. Tue May 2 17:01:01 GMT 1995: Calibration LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 17:05:50 GMT 1995 changed exposure to 50. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 17:07:13 GMT 1995 Changed exposure to 70. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 17:09:30 GMT 1995 changed exposure to 90. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 17:11:48 GMT 1995 Exposure changed to 110. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 17:13:40 GMT 1995 Typing R during SYNC does not stop program anymore, trying Q. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 17:15:36 GMT 1995 lll Rebooting and starting over. There must be a keyboard error that was preventing stopping test. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 17:18:30 GMT 1995 Manually set exposure to 10 in case reboot did not reset to default. L00229 rewound and restarted in unit 0. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 17:28:00 GMT 1995 Starting test over, keyboard unresponsive when trying to enter 30. If there are no problems, will just run a series of exposures at 10, 30, 50, 70, etc. until saturation, without logging changes. WEATHER COMMENT: Tue May 2 17:45:19 GMT 1995 In orographic clouds. No shadows since sun climbed into lenticular early on. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 17:49:54 GMT 1995 Ending test at exposure 250, taking scans at default 10. Got the impression that test did not run as expected. At typing R during sync, got message: " Enter ha move float" typed in exposure value and a return, value echoed in message:, then program continued. The frame grab interval did not seem to change significantly throughout ranges 10-250, which I thought they should. When I went back to 10, and tried to halt with an R during sync later on to refresh my memory about the message, program wouldn't respond to keyboard. Sending this portion of log and tape to Tomczyk and Elmore for evaluation. Aborting test. Removing cardboard cover from coelostat window. Loading L00230 and L00231 into units 0 and 1, and restarting LOWL observation program. Tue May 2 18:00:58 GMT 1995: Calibration COMMENT: Tue May 2 18:09:13 GMT 1995 Guiding was off sun. repointed. still in clouds, but not as thick. Tue May 2 19:01:03 GMT 1995: Calibration LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 19:38:59 GMT 1995 David suggested that I use R instead of r for linearity test. Redoing test. Covered window, reloaded L00229. Will run series of exposures : 10, 30, 50, etc. Tue May 2 20:01:30 GMT 1995: Calibration COMMENT: Tue May 2 20:08:22 GMT 1995 Opened top of dome. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 20:21:07 GMT 1995 Test would not take 110, would echo 10 and scan would look like a 10 rate. skipped that step and went to 130. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 20:42:40 GMT 1995 Didn't see much change after 150, went all the way to 210. Repeated 110, program took it this time. Will go on back to 10, then will increment 20, 40, 60, etc. Tue May 2 21:01:02 GMT 1995: Calibration Tue May 2 21:21:05 GMT 1995: Patrol End COMMENT: Tue May 2 21:21:19 GMT 1995 Stopping observations, never got out of thin cirrus, in and out of thick lenticular cloud and altostratus. Keeping DPMON tape but recycling MKIII tape due to no good data all morning. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 21:23:52 GMT 1995 Ran even increments to 200. Not much change after 120. (even meaning 20 40 60 etc.) Reset rate to 10. Will remove covers then stop tape then reload L00230 and L00231 and restart observing program. LOW-L COMMENT: Tue May 2 21:37:01 GMT 1995 LOWL program restarted. COMMENT: Tue May 2 21:37:15 GMT 1995 Activity report: QP: 44; 240-255; 275; 287-295; 308; No worthwhile coronal data. Tapes: MKIII: recycled DPMON: P00346 LOWL: Starting L00230 Tue May 2 21:40:50 GMT 1995: Filemark
