----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sat Dec 28 17:41:12 GMT 1996 Year: 96 Doy: 363 Observer: koon WEATHER COMMENT: Sat Dec 28 17:41:18 GMT 1996 Altocumulus with thin cirrostratus above, wind is gusting over 65 mph, temp=34 F. LOW-L COMMENT: Sat Dec 28 18:38:34 GMT 1996 It appears that something is indeed slipping between the motor/encoder and the instrument head. I can send sx commands then check the encoder and it is positioned where I send it but the instrument head doesn't move. It is too windy to hear if the motor is actually turning but it probably is. The weather is too harsh to safely work on the instrument right now, I'll wait to see if it gets better. WEATHER COMMENT: Sat Dec 28 18:43:14 GMT 1996 When I checked the NOAA anemometer (about 15 minutes ago) and the wind is gusting between 40 and 70 mph. It is difficult to stand in one place or walk in a straight line outside. COMMENT: Sat Dec 28 19:24:51 GMT 1996 I tightened some of the nuts and bolts on the mounts and couplers for the WWVH antennae mast, some were getting loose. Also mopped up some water on the floor in the control room near the Decwriter printer, looks like it came in through the door we normally use. Other than that everything seems to be handling the weather very well. LOW-L COMMENT: Sat Dec 28 20:28:24 GMT 1996 Weather still too harsh to fix problem. I'll get to it on Monday if the weather permits. The rough draft of my R+R Instruction Sheet for the Harmonic Drive is in the lowl operations manual along with some drawings and other information, it is in the location of the SX commands page for now.
