Tue Jun 3 17:21:47 GMT 1997 CHIP CHIP Start Patrol COMMENT: Tue Jun 3 17:19:39 GMT 1997 Star of observations was delayed due to request from Eric to run some tape d drive tests on Nene and Kii before startup this morning. After sifting through about 50 e-mail messages I found the ones I needed to do the tests and tried out a few things. Eric already rebooted Kii without any change in tape drive performance so that is ruled out, I tried the tar -cv * command twice from the xterm window on Kii and it looked as though files were written to the problem tape drive without any problems, there wasn't any error messages and the lights showed activity on the drive and the xterm window listed each file one by one as it was written to the tape. I swapped drives between Kii and Nene and started up the observing programs. CHIP started up right away with no problems using the drive that is normally used for dPMon data. After typing Run for the dPMon it stalled for a long time with the message: Checking tape... on the screen. It finally continued and printed out the following: Checking tape... I let it sit while I waded through all my e-mail trying to figure out what has been going on and what the current status is with the CHIP light loss and tape drive. I will now try some things starting with Kill, eject tape, turn off power to tape drive, switch cable and terminator connections, startup with Run again. Will keep an eye on this. WEATHER COMMENT: Tue Jun 3 20:15:10 GMT 1997 The sky hasbecome unusually bright in just the last 30 minutes or so, it looks like there is a thin layer of cirrus up there. DPMON COMMENT: Tue Jun 3 20:52:05 GMT 1997 So far, the tape drive is working properly as far as I can tell. So there is something wrong with the spare tape drive also. Ejecting the tape and stopping observations.
