MKIII COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 16:49:14 GMT 1997 Reset KCC after startup to clear "tape not detected" message. Running with R-squared spare drive. LOW-L COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 16:50:04 GMT 1997 LOWL tape L00478 was popped. L00479 in drive 1 active, cleaned drive 0 and loaded L00480. Stopped, writing an EOF, Unloading. Will turn KCC off, then connect MKIII drive with the active terminator, turn KCC back on, attempt to use MKIII drive with the mod. Unloading H01674, loading H01675. PICS COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 18:24:04 GMT 1997 Difficult keeping occulting stable. MKIII COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 18:35:53 GMT 1997 After Idle, I will reset KCC again, Begin Day, and restart Patrol. I got message "interrupt: ei driver: command field frozen" twice after the first write began. Fri Oct 24 18:39:18 GMT 1997 MKIII Start Patrol MKIII COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 18:44:13 GMT 1997 No funnies this time. I think it was because I forgot to press Begin Day last time after I powered the KCC down and swapped drives. MKIII COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 18:49:50 GMT 1997 After two successful writes, third file write attempt gave me a pile of tape write error 0 messages. If this occurs after the 4th file, I will unload this tape, reconnect the spare drive, and restart the tape (H01675) on the spare drive. MKIII COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 18:52:23 GMT 1997 Executing plan. Image 4 write failed--got a pile of errors. MKIII COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 18:56:54 GMT 1997 Swap done, powered KCC up to load tape into spare drive, turned KCC back off to test David's suggested power-up technique of powering up KCC, and immediately (I waited a couple of seconds) pressing the red reset switch, to see if the "No tape detected" messages are eliminated. They were. Fri Oct 24 19:01:27 GMT 1997 PICS Flat Fri Oct 24 19:02:50 GMT 1997 PICS End Flat COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 19:18:41 GMT 1997 Going down to GONG to do weekly PM. WEATHER COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 21:00:21 GMT 1997 In thin cirrus. COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 21:00:36 GMT 1997 I tried tweeking the transresistor amplifier gain on the spar guider EW board. I did not see any change in the way the O1 guider stepper responded to the oscillating spar guider. Set gain back to approximately where it was. Fri Oct 24 21:02:47 GMT 1997 PICS End Flat MKIII COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 21:04:08 GMT 1997 Stopping MKIII due to cirrus. COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 21:11:00 GMT 1997 Checked RA gain, looks OK. I'm wondering if the O1 guider fix is causing the spar to oscillate? Or is it just oscillating to compensate for the Spar Guider oscillation? COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 21:22:21 GMT 1997 Found a piece of aluminum with a hole in the middle, used it as an iris on the spar guider to stop the aperature down a bit. This seemed to reduce the oscillation. COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 21:33:26 GMT 1997 Well.. the stop slid off, so it wasn't a good test. Tried adjusting the sensor gain again, 2 turns CW, then back, then 2 turns CCW. No change. Centered the O1 guider stepper with the Spar guider E/W adjustment at the rear of the guider tube. WEATHER COMMENT: Fri Oct 24 21:35:45 GMT 1997 Cirrus variably thick and extensive now. It'll screw up any guider tests. Data bad. Stopping.
