It lasted about two seconds and turned off all the observing programs, I'm still in the process of recovering. Wed Jul 1 18:33:46 GMT 1998 PICS Start Patrol PICS COMMENT: Wed Jul 1 18:34:47 GMT 1998 Up and running with new tape. LOW-L COMMENT: Wed Jul 1 18:35:31 GMT 1998 Up and running, saved new tape with 2 or 3 files on it. Moved L00528 from Test Drive #1 to drive #0, data are going to that drive, installed L00529 in Test Drive #1. **CHIP PROBLEM**: Wed Jul 1 18:38:13 GMT 1998 Didn't boot up OK, getting error messages constantly scrolling across the screen. It looks like trouble reading from the hard disk. GONG COMMENT: Wed Jul 1 18:41:05 GMT 1998 GONG instrument recovered nicely or wasn't affected due to its UPS. COMMENT: Wed Jul 1 18:41:47 GMT 1998 I just did a Scintillometer data disk backup before the crash, so I got lucky there and didn't get any crash or lose data since the program will wait until tomorrow to start again. **CHIP PROBLEM**: Wed Jul 1 18:52:27 GMT 1998 Tried doing STOP-A during error messages, that will get me to the PROM Monitor, but after typing sync there is an automatic reboot and eventually the same endless list of the same error messages scrolling by. The messages start just after the part of the normal bootup screen message: Starting ACOS shared memory PICS COMMENT: Wed Jul 1 18:57:39 GMT 1998 Paused the program and rebooted the MCC to see if that helps the CHIP problem. PICS COMMENT: Wed Jul 1 19:13:08 GMT 1998 Restarted the Patrol. **CHIP PROBLEM**: Wed Jul 1 19:13:18 GMT 1998 Still can't get beyond the error messages in the bootup. Wed Jul 1 19:48:42 GMT 1998 MKIII Start Patrol MKIII COMMENT: Wed Jul 1 19:48:51 GMT 1998 Starting Patrol since there are clear spots between the clouds. The KCP was frozen, I couldn't use the mouse to stop the Patrol, so I reset the KCC. Selected Idle to get the barrel to stop, it started rotating at KCC reboot. **MKIII PROBLEM**: Wed Jul 1 21:13:17 GMT 1998 Scans are working correctly but the data looks real bad, like maybe the correctors are bad, but the sky is cloudy so I can't tell for sure. I'll stop the Patrol for today and see how the scans look tomorrow. No data for today. **CHIP PROBLEM**: Wed Jul 1 21:38:40 GMT 1998 I sent a message to "trouble" regarding the possible hard disk problem. Kitty Ferguson called me and together we were able to determine that there are two Hard Disk Drives on Kii, and that the one that has local and local/d is the bad one. We set things up so that the bad disk was bypassed so I could reboot the computer, now Kitty will remotely check out the disk and file system and let us know what she finds. At least the boot disk was OK so it may be that we can get things fixed without sending the entire sparcstation to Boulder for installation of a new Operating System.
