COMMENT: Sat Jul 1 17:05:11 GMT 2000 USGS is drilling a 400' deep hole about 750' to the NE of MLSO, they will put one of their new strain meters in it - part of a network stretched across Mauna Loa that will be monitoring seismic strain due to magma flow deep underground. They are creating some dust, I went down to check it out when I left on Thursday and it wasn't bad, the main dust comes from the clay substance they mix with water for a lubricant that they pour into the hole, dust flies as they empty the bag, about 40 bags are used per day and they are drilling 24 hours per day. They should be done on Monday. Main danger is probably the crews driving down and up as we arrive and depart. The wind rarely blows from that direction. MKIV COMMENT: Sat Jul 1 17:24:47 GMT 2000 Pausing, so far no data due to cirrus. **MLSO PROBLEM**: Sat Jul 1 17:26:17 GMT 2000 Network is extremely slow, GONG monitor is crashed and so is the NOAA camera monitor due to this slowness.
