I tried every possibble combination of connector order and converter placement using the 2 new converters and the 2 old converters. I've made some progress, I'll list the most significant findings. The old converter setup continues to work. I brought both new converters to MLSO and connected the mlgong-x terminal to our network switch just as the shelter workstation could be connected usinf 2 new converters, it worked, it connected at 10 Mbps. I also tried connecting each new converter singly using the 100base FX dedicated 100 bps port (like the Groundwinds project uses), it didn't work, but that probably has to do with a setting at the x terminal that should be set to 100 Mbps. Eventually mlgong and mlgong-x need to be set to work at 100 Mbps. I finally got a link going with the 2 new converters up here on mlgong-x by moving the switch-side converter MDI switch from MDI to MDIX and back to MDI, I don't understand why but that toggled something in the auto- configure converters so that they started working correctly. I also cycled that MDI switch at the workstation-side converter a little earlier - I'm not sure if that helped too. But those MDI switches are in the positions that I originally had them when the converters didn't work for mlgong link. One difference I've seen is that the shelter (mlgong) link lights the REC LED but the mlgong-x link setup lights the 10 LED instead (for 10 Mbps). If the MDI switches aren't in the correct position you don't get either the REC or the 10 LEDs light, so it is easy to figure their correct postions. So it looks like there may need to a change made to some configuration on the mlgong rj45 port to at least get a 10 Mbps connection going with the 2 new converters, then we can return the old converter to NOAA. To use the dedicated 100base FX connection we probably need to set both mlgong and mlgong-x to 100 Mbps speed at their rj45 ports. I now have it working at 10 Mbps using the old GONG converter at the shelter and a new converter up here. Tomorrow I'll try to swap the old converter for a new one again using that strange auto-configure reset method I found where the MDI switches need to be cycled.
