----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sat Jun 12 17:22:28 GMT 2021 Year: 21 Doy: 163 Observer: mlso Sat Jun 12 17:27:44 GMT 2021 Kcor Focus/alignment program exited GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Sat Jun 12 17:42:43 GMT 2021 On my way in this morning the breaks on the Elantra started making a grinding noise that seemed to come from the front passenger side. When filling the tank with petrol I did a visual inspection of the front breaks and could see a gouge in the rotor located on the front passenger side. I did not feel comfortable taking the Elantra up to the observatory, particularly on the Maunaloa mountain road, so I switched cars at the NOAA facility in Hilo and drove the Ford up to the observatory. On my way up I filled the Ford with petrol. I will bring the Ford back to NOAA in Hilo at the end of the day. I will place a call to Lex Brody in Hilo when they open and see when I can get the Elantra in for service. ___end___ WEATHER COMMENT: mcotter: Sat Jun 12 17:44:32 GMT 2021 Temp: 50.8f, Humidity: 9%, Pressure: 28.775in, Wind: 2mph from 66degs, Skies: Clear but hazy skies with high altitude Cirrus spread across the sky in different areas. Skies are very bright. ___end___ UCoMP COMMENT BY mcotter: Sat Jun 12 17:46:47 GMT 2021 Ucomp up and running. ___end___ KCOR COMMENT BY mcotter: Sat Jun 12 17:49:48 GMT 2021 Kcor SGS offsets: X(RA): -125, Y(Dec): 85. Polarization checked: Mid, Bright, Dark, Mid. ___end___ UCoMP COMMENT BY mcotter: Sat Jun 12 19:40:50 GMT 2021 I started Ucomp this morning using menu "all_coronal_7.menu." Upon reading my emails this morning I saw that Ben had updated the menus that were to be used when operating Ucomp. I stopped Ucomp and reloaded menu "All_Pol_Calibrate.menu". The"All_Pol_Calibrate.menu" completed running and I then loaded "all_coronal_7.menu". Ucomp now running. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Sat Jun 12 19:44:31 GMT 2021 High altitude Cirrus clouds are increasing and the sky is becoming increasingly bright. I am continuing to let Kcor and Ucomp run at this time. If it appears that the images become over saturated because of the ever increasing brightness of the sky I will halt instrument operations until conditions improve. ___end___ WEATHER COMMENT: mcotter: Sat Jun 12 21:20:26 GMT 2021 Temp: 53.3f, Humidity: 53%, Pressure: 28.773in, Wind: 5mph from 319degs, Skies: High altitude Cirrus clouds are increasing in areas across the sky. Altocumulus clouds are rapidly forming in patches across the summit of Maunaloa, including in the viewing area. Overall general brightness of the sky has increased dramatically. ___end___ KCOR COMMENT BY mcotter: Sat Jun 12 21:25:08 GMT 2021 Because of increasingly bright skies and scattered Altocumulus clouds I have stopped Kcor until conditions improve. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Sat Jun 12 23:47:38 GMT 2021 The sky has become completely overcast. The dome shutter doors and windows have been closed in the event of precipitation. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun Jun 13 00:17:27 GMT 2021 Early morning was clear enough to get some data for both Kcor and Ucomp, though the sky was a little bright. High altitude Cirrus and then Altocumulus clouds began to form and quickly covered the sky in the late morning. ___end___ ONSITE STAFF: mcotter ONSITE STAFF: mcotter
