----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mauna Loa Solar Observatory Observer's Log ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sun May 17 16:46:36 GMT 2026 Year:26 Doy:137 Observer: mcotter Weather COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 15:25:49 GMT 2026 MLO Current Weather Timestamp (UTC): 2026-05-17 16:38:00 Temperature : 41.7 deg F Dew Point : 26.54 deg F Pressure : 680.76 mbar Wind Speed : 8.05 mph Wind Direction : 229.7 deg Skies: A thick hazy blue brown inversion layer is visible on the horizon just below the peak of Haleakala. There are some lower level scattered Cirrostratus clouds visible on the horizon in all directions but above the sky is clear, though it appears a bit bright. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 15:27:38 GMT 2026 Power Supply Levels: The power levels were as follows: ECO FLO: Battery 73%. YETI: Battery 0%. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 15:31:25 GMT 2026 The YETI power level was at 0%. Due to this, I switched input power to the Yeti from the panels to the output of the ECO FLO to get the charge level up. I also switched the internet computer to the Eco Flo output until the YETI reaches a satisfactory level to switch the net back again. ___end___ Sun May 17 15:46:05 GMT 2026 Kcor Focus/alignment program exited KCOR COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 15:56:04 GMT 2026 Kcor: I ran the Focus Routine and the image was bright, but the focus range was good and parabola trace was good. I attempted to run the Observing code but the Synoptic images were to bright to observe at this time. The sky did appear a bit bright before I started the observing code, but I will wait about 20 minutes and try again and hopefully the Sun will have risen above the scattered light on the horizon. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 15:57:21 GMT 2026 Dome open. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 15:57:32 GMT 2026 Opened windows upstairs. ___end___ ** KCOR PM mcotter ** : Sun May 17 15:57:40 GMT 2026 Blew off Kcor O1. ___end___ ** GENERAL PROBLEM REPORTED BY mcotter ** : Sun May 17 16:02:33 GMT 2026 Global connect: Having issues connecting with Global Protect. I have attempted to connect multiple times and was able to connect finally, but it has dropped out again on the Wahoo 2 computer. I will continue to attempt to connect with the Wahoo 2 computer. I had to try with the Kcor computer a few times but was finally able to connect and it has stayed connected. ___end___ BY mcotter: Sun May 17 16:09:18 GMT 2026 Power Supply Levels: The ECO FLO panels are getting sunlight so I switched the YETI back to the panels input source. The power input and battery levels are as follows: ECO FLO: Input power: 215 W. Batter: 52%. YETI: Input power: 80 W. Battery: 6%. ___end___ KCOR COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 16:17:35 GMT 2026 Kcor: Observing was again attempted, but the sky still remains too bright. ___end___ KCOR COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 16:33:05 GMT 2026 Kcor: The Kcor instrument is now observing. The Synoptic images have darkened and look good. The polarization was verified and looks good. ___end___ KCOR COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 16:52:19 GMT 2026 Kcor: The Kcor NRGF images look a bit blurry. I am rerunning the Focus Routine to see if I can obtain a better focus. ___end___ Sun May 17 16:53:05 GMT 2026 Kcor Focus/alignment program exited KCOR COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 16:58:35 GMT 2026 I re-ran the focus routine, but I ended up manually changing the focus range from 133.45 to 134.52. The Observing code is now running and the polarization looks good. ___end___ KCOR COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 17:01:47 GMT 2026 Kcor: The sky remains bright but the Synoptic images look good. ___end___ KCOR COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 18:34:32 GMT 2026 Kcor: The Kcor NRGF image now looks to be in better focus. ___end___ Weather COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 18:44:19 GMT 2026 MLO Current Weather Timestamp (UTC): 2026-05-17 18:38:00 Temperature : 48.31 deg F Dew Point : 32.01 deg F Pressure : 681.8 mbar Wind Speed : 2.24 mph Wind Direction : 100.8 deg Skies: Orographic clouds have come in from the south and are now encroaching into the viewing area. ___end___ KCOR BY mcotter: Sun May 17 18:45:56 GMT 2026 Kcor: The Kcor instrument has been stopped due to clouds coming in from the south over the peak of Maunaloa. ___end___ Weather COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 19:44:40 GMT 2026 MLO Current Weather Timestamp (UTC): 2026-05-17 19:41:00 Temperature : 49.28 deg F Dew Point : 38.17 deg F Pressure : 682.23 mbar Wind Speed : 12.08 mph Wind Direction : 30.4 deg Skies: The sky has become mostly overcast with more clouds coming in from the south and east. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 19:45:33 GMT 2026 Dome closed: The dome and windows are now closed due to poor sky conditions. ___end___ KCOR COMMENT BY KCOR: Sun May 17 20:17:57 GMT 2026 KCOR file transfer report KCor created 211 .bin files 207 .fts files NOTICE ? 4 .bin file(s) with no matching .fts: 20260517_171020_kcor.bin 20260517_173646_kcor.bin 20260517_180840_kcor.bin 20260517_184249_kcor.bin Remote site is complete ? no rsync required. ___end___ KCOR COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 20:26:05 GMT 2026 Kcor: The Kcor computer has been powered off to conserve ECO FLO battery level. ___end___ Guider/spar COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 20:27:17 GMT 2026 The Guider/SGS power has been turned off. ___end___ BY mcotter: Sun May 17 20:33:44 GMT 2026 Power Supply Levels: To conserve battery levels everything, except for the network computer (and the Wahoo 2 computer that I am using to write the log) have been turned off to conserve power. I have left the network computer plugged into the ECO FLO power supply due to the YETI not having a lot of battery back up at this time. ECO FLO battery level: 29%. Input power: approximately 600 W YETI battery level: 20%. Input power: approximately 180 W. ___end___ Weather COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 22:01:56 GMT 2026 MLO Current Weather Timestamp (UTC): 2026-05-17 21:56:00 Temperature : 48.2 deg F Dew Point : 41.21 deg F Pressure : 682.14 mbar Wind Speed : 3.8 mph Wind Direction : 325.6 deg Skies: The sky is heavily overcast with a light fog starting to move into the observatory area. ___end___ GENERAL COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 22:59:24 GMT 2026 End Of Day: Today's sky started off bright and caused a late start to observing. Unfortunately clouds came in shortly after observing started and the instrument was shut down. The clouds really started getting heavy and the dome was closed after a brief time. The ECO FLO battery is currently at 43% and the YETI battery is at 35%. Because the YETI does not have a large battery supply I am going to leave the network connected to the ECO FLO power supply ___end___ Logger COMMENT BY mcotter: Sun May 17 22:59:30 GMT 2026 Log closed ONSITE STAFF: mcotter ___end___
